Introducing 8-K earnings release extraction

SpreadSpace now extracts the earnings release in an 8-K filing, from the quarter's financial statements to the non-GAAP reconciliation, guidance and operating metrics.

By SpreadSpace3 min read

Public companies report each quarter's results in an earnings release, usually before the 10-Q or the 10-K that covers the same period. The release reaches the SEC in an 8-K, most often as Exhibit 99.1.

SpreadSpace now reads that release. Upload the 8-K or the exhibit on its own, and the statements and tables it prints land in the spread with every figure linked to its page.

What SpreadSpace reads from the release

SpreadSpace extracts the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement the release prints. Each column keeps the period it reports, so a quarter stays a quarter and a full year stays a year.

It also extracts the tables a release carries and a 10-Q does not. The reconciliation of non-GAAP measures to their GAAP figures, the company's guidance and its operating metrics each arrive as their own table, with the rows and columns as printed.

What SpreadSpace extracts from an 8-K earnings release
TableWhat it holds
Income statementEach period the release prints, kept to its own length
Balance sheetEach date the release prints
Cash flow statementEach period the release prints
Non-GAAP reconciliationEach non-GAAP measure beside the GAAP figure it starts from
GuidanceThe low and high of each range, dated as of the release
Operating metricsThe figures the company reports beside its financial statements

Guidance stays apart from results

Guidance sits in its own table, dated as of the release. It is never charted as a result and never mixed into a reported period.

The fourth quarter, from the release

A company files 10-Qs for its first three quarters and a 10-K for the full year, so the earnings release is often the only document that prints the fourth quarter on its own. SpreadSpace reads that quarter from the release and checks it against the year the 10-K reports.

Every figure opens its page

Click a figure from the release to open the release at that line. Tables that repeat from quarter to quarter line up across releases, so a non-GAAP reconciliation or an operating metric reads as one series.
